Debunking Myths About NDIS Disability Support Services

Since the NDIS started to roll out in Australia, there have been a lot of myths about what supports the NDIS will fund, who is eligible and what options participants have with plan reviews.

Debunking Myths About NDIS Disability Support Services

It’s normal for you to have questions about the NDIS. Even participants receiving support for years with the NDIS still get confused and ask, “What is the NDIS support funding?”.

Everyone’s journey with the NDIS disability services will be unique, so it isn’t always easy to get the answer to your specific questions. To make things more transparent, we have developed some common myths below and provided the facts.

Myth: The NDIS funds your medications.

Fact: This is not true. The NDIS doesn’t fund the cost of your medications. It is because medication comes under the responsibility of the healthcare system.

Myth: You need to be eligible to access Plan Management.

Fact: People with disability can access funding for Plan Management with the help of a registered NDIS provider. The way to receive the funding is to ask for it at your plan meeting or review. For assistance with self-care activities in Australia and plan management, speak with your provider’s team.

Myth: The NDIS will pay for a holiday.

Fact: No! The NDIS will never fund your holidays. You may be allowed to access additional funds for support that you need as part of your holiday.

Myth: If I don’t have enough funds for Plan Management in my initial plan, I won’t be able to access it.

Fact: If you didn’t ask for Plan Management in your first NDIS planning meeting and would now like support managing your plan funds, you can request a plan review. Asking for Plan Management to be added to your plan is a  cause to request a plan review, and the NDIS cannot refuse this request.

Myth: The NDIS is entirely funded by the Federal Government.

Fact: The NDIS is funded by the Federal and State Governments and taxpayers. Approximately $22 billion a year is invested by governments in the NDIS, making it the most significant social reform in Australia’s history. In addition, the Federal Government fund more than half of the bill.
